36 questions to ask before a first date

The worst first dates aren't the awkward ones — they're the pleasant ones with someone you were never compatible with, discovered three dates too late. The fix is asking the important things before you meet, so the date itself can be about chemistry instead of due diligence.

These 36 questions are grouped by what they actually reveal. You won't ask all of them — pick the ones whose answers would change your decision, and keep the tone curious rather than interrogative. One real question, honestly answered, is worth an evening of "so what do you do for fun?"

Intent — are you looking for the same thing?

4. What would make you stop dating someone after two great dates?
5. Where do you hope to be living in five years?

Family & future — the questions that decide everything

12. Do you want kids? On what timeline?
13. How close are you to your family — and what role would they play in your relationship?
14. Would you relocate for a partner? Would you expect one to relocate for you?
15. What did your parents' relationship teach you — to copy or to avoid?
16. Does faith or tradition shape how you'd build a family?

Money — the silent dealbreaker

17. Are you a saver or a spender — and what do you happily overspend on?
18. How would you want a couple to handle money — shared, separate, or something between?
19. What does "financially stable enough to settle down" mean to you?
20. How ambitious are you, honestly — and what are you ambitious for?

Conflict — how do you fight?

21. When you're upset, do you need space or conversation?
22. What does a fight look like with you — and how does it end?
23. What's something a partner did during a disagreement that made you trust them more?
24. How do you apologize?
25. What's the most unfair criticism an ex made of you — and was any of it true?

Roles & expectations

26. How do you picture splitting work, home, and chores between partners?
27. If both careers demanded a move at once, how would you decide?
28. Whose job is the emotional check-in — or is that not a job?

Character — who are they when it costs something?

29. What are your actual flaws — the ones an ex would name?
30. What are you proudest of that isn't on a résumé?
31. What's a belief you changed your mind about as an adult?
